Improving Graduation Rates

With graduation just around the corner, now is a great time to assess your students' progress towards graduation requirements.

In this post, we will be focused on using the Metrics function of IO Insights to do real-time prediction of graduation from grades 9 through 12.

Traditionally, graduation information has been tracked on mega-spreadsheets with hundreds of formulas making sure all credits have been tallied and applied towards graduation requirements.

While spreadsheets will work, did you know that you can do this more easily using Metrics within IO Insights?

The best part is that IO Insights is always up-to-date with the latest credits, current course enrollment and report card grades, giving you a real-time evaluation of the graduation path for each student.

Let's look at an example:

Imagine your student, Ryan, has 6.5 core English credits on his transcript and was scheduled for 2 credits in English to meet the requirement of 8 credits.

Unfortunately, Ryan is failing one of his English classes and will not have enough credits to graduate. Using traditional spreadsheets, counselors may not realize this until it is too late to intervene.

With IO insights, the predicted graduation metric does the calculations for you and both counselors and teachers are alerted to the failing grade on the last report card. Now, teachers have the time to meet with Ryan to guide him and provide the support he needs to graduate on time.

With predictive graduation metrics, everyone in the school is empowered to identify issues much earlier and make appropriate interventions to help students meet graduation requirements. This goes beyond just calculating the number of credits on the transcript for each subject area and uses expected number of credits to be earned this term based on the course enrollment and latest report card grades.

You can try predictive graduation metrics right now.

To use the predicted graduation metric that has already been created, following these steps:
Within IO Insights, go to the Metrics tab on the navigation bar and choose either the Overall Results report or the Breakdown Analysis Report
Select the predicted graduation metric, choose your chart options (Plot, Compare and Filter) and execute the chart. You can drill down to the students by clicking the chart.

If you want to take a step further and create your own predictive metrics, follow these steps: http://casenex.desk.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2548576-metrics-design-metric using the example below:
Click Design Metric and add the English Predictive Credits data point (a combination of the current achieved English Credits and the Number of classes currently passed on the Report Card) and English Regents data point.

Define 2 Metric Categories called "On-Track" and "Off-Track" and set the data points to be the following:

* On-Track for English Predictive Credits at 8, and English Regents at 65.
* Filter it for the 12th grade

Save your metric.

From there, if you run the Breakdown Analysis Report, you can see some student may have fallen off track for graduation because they are currently failing English even though they have enough credits. This analysis is giving you real-time predictive warning of seniors who might not graduate due to failing classes.

If you have students on this report, it is time to take action!

This type of progress-to-goal metrics within IO Insights is a powerful tool to help turn data into meaningful insights that drive real action in your classroom and school.
